What is Restorative Yoga?
Restorative yoga provides a profoundly restful practice centered on slowing down and nurturing the body. Practitioners are fully supported by props throughout each pose.
An excellent complement to busy, demanding lifestyles, restorative yoga serves as a powerful antidote to stress. Particularly beneficial for those recovering from injury or illness, it activates the body’s natural healing mechanisms, leaving participants feeling profoundly rested, calm, and rejuvenated.
Unlike most other styles of yoga, restorative sessions take place entirely on the floor, with every pose supported by props for effortless relaxation. Throughout the one-hour class, participants are guided through four or five poses, interspersed with breathwork and meditations. All levels are welcome to experience the transformative tranquility of restorative yoga.
Frequently Asked Questions
Restorative yoga is a gentle and therapeutic style of yoga that uses props, such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks, to support the body in a series of gentle and passive poses. The aim of restorative yoga is to reduce stress and promote deep relaxation, which can help to improve physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
While both Yin yoga and Restorative yoga are slow-paced practices, they are very different. In Yin, you are applying gentle stress to specific tissues, by stretching deeply. In Restorative yoga you are supporting your body with props, allowing your body to release stress and tension by relaxing deeply.
The key is comfort. You can wear anything from leggings to looser style casual pants, and a light long sleeve to cozy up in.
All props are provided, including yoga mats. You need only bring yourself and a desire for deep, healing rest.
Restorative yoga is the perfect practice for chronic pain suffers as it can help you transform chronic pain-and-stress responses into “chronic healing” responses of mind and body. Restorative yoga engages the parasympathetic state which stimulates your body’s natural healing mechanisms. Meditations and breath work help quiet the mind and calm the emotions, reducing the struggle and suffering often experienced with chronic pain. The deep relaxation allows the whole body to let go of tension created by chronic pain, allowing energy to flow more freely through the body, particularly to areas of injury where it’s most essential for healing.
